There’s nothing quite so alluring as poring through the Southampton Records Series. Though the results come in tiny and suggestive fragments the riddles they set are engaging, and there are so many things to discover that have nothing much to do with my work but are delightful background. For example: I didn’t know that there was a particular kind of cheese made after Michaelmas, and that it was produced within the bishopric of Winchester on the estates in Bitterne.
More seriously, I have been surprised at the amount of particularly English material in the version of Bevis I am working on. A thought begins to grow …!
