Small steps

Getting back into Boeve and its contexts is turning out to be a matter of small steps, but each one is rewarding in its own way. Finding my way through the historical complications of the end of the 12th and early 13th centuries is no easy task, but it’s always fascinating to get to know another time period and its political contortions. It has been rather poignant for me to start reading more about Henry of Blois, who briefly came within the research orbit of a dear friend many years ago. It is strange after 20 years to be looking at Arundel castle and its role in the ‘imprisonment’ of Empress Matilda and to find that this, and Henry have a bearing on my Boeve research. I am looking forward to finding out how all this will resolve. I know where I’m going, I’m just not quite sure what I’m going to encounter on the way!
