Capture the Castle

Happy to say yesterday’s presentation of my Bevis paper went well, and it was a really interesting day. A small audience (responsibility for publicity apparently never got sorted out so only a few people heard about the event) were treated to papers on diverse matters, from Dodie Smith’s I Capture the Castle, via my paper on Castles as Perilous female Space in Bevis’, to Howard Barker’s play The Castle (challenging but stimulating!), to feminised castle space in Shakespeare.

Of course the real highlight was the tour of the Castles exhibition in the Southampton Civic Centre Art Gallery. Very diverse styles included a fantasy section, so we viewed the exotic Gormenghast as well as Helm’s Deep (I had already pointed out this isn’t a castle!), and scenes from Helm’s Deep. Turner watercolours, Turner watercolours, and a wonderful little up-to-date image of a ruined tower of Hadleigh Castle were just a few of the delights.
