Bevis in the Literary Encyclopaedia

I am happy to say I have just been commissioned to write the entry for Sir Bevis of Hampton for The Literary Encyclopaedia, an online teaching and research resource. The usefulness of this site may be investigated at http://www.litencyc.com/

Meanwhile, work on Boeve and Southampton gets more complex all the time. Judith Weiss’s Inntroduction to her translation is invaluable for reminding me how little can be said with certain about the origins of a text whose manuscript evidence post-dates composition by a century and more, but Karine Ugé’s book on Medieval Flanders has proved stimulating reading. The whole project is fascinating.
